Our Story

How It All Began

Emily realized Dan was serious when the book came in the mail: You Can Farm! by Joel Salatin. Uh-oh.

For years the garden had already been Dan’s “mistress,” but this took things to a new level. Seasons of fire escape tomatoes, raised garden beds that tripled in number and bounty over only two years, road trips to market farms all over the East Coast, and planning summer vacation around harvest time had finally culminated in this.

Sure he can farm, but can we farm? Emily wondered.

Over the past few years, the dream became our dream. We started working toward the goal of beginning a farm, dreaming of raising our family amidst nature and learning to live closer to the land, and also becoming a source of local sustainably grown food.

We packed up one kid, one dog, and three cats and with some much-needed assistance from grandma, moved from our home in Hicksville, NY, Long Island (just outside of NYC) during the worst winter storm of 2020. After years of moving, dreaming, and planning, we found ourselves back near Emily’s midwestern roots, on 14 acres of land with an old farmhouse on the outskirts of South Bend, IN.

We are focused on starting small and being careful to add only the minimum infrastructure. We’ll continue to invest in the farm for several years as we grow to around an acre in size.

With a focus on organic and sustainable methods, we hope to breathe new life into farmland that is drained of nutrients after years of conventional corn and soybean farming. We hope to be a small business that contributes to the local economy. We hope to be neighborly to all those we are honored to call neighbors, especially our namesake barn swallows, who have graciously allowed us to use their barn.
